What is End-Point Assessment?

End-Point Assessment (EPA) is the final, independent assessment that takes place at the end of an apprenticeship. It's designed to test whether an apprentice has gained the knowledge, skills, and behaviours outlined in their apprenticeship standard.

EPA is different from ongoing training assessments. It's conducted by an independent organisation (like Lead Edge Ltd) to ensure impartiality and consistency across the industry.

The EPA confirms that apprentices are truly competent and work-ready, giving employers confidence in the qualifications being awarded.

The EPA Process

A clear, step-by-step journey from gateway to results

1

Gateway

The training provider confirms the apprentice is ready for EPA. This includes checking they've completed the required on-programme learning and have met the gateway requirements.

2

EPA Registration

The training provider registers the apprentice with Lead Edge Ltd. We review the gateway evidence and confirm the apprentice is ready to proceed.

3

Scheduling

We work with you to arrange convenient dates and locations for the assessment. We aim for fast turnaround times without compromising quality.

4

Assessment

Our expert assessors conduct the EPA according to the apprenticeship standard. Methods vary by standard but may include observations, interviews, tests, projects, or portfolios.

5

Quality Assurance

All assessments undergo internal quality assurance to ensure consistency, fairness, and compliance with assessment plans.

6

Results & Certification

Results are issued promptly. Successful apprentices receive their certificate, and we provide feedback to support continuous improvement.

Assessment Methods

Different standards use different assessment methods. Here are the most common:

Observation

Assessors watch the apprentice perform tasks in a real or simulated work environment, checking their practical skills and workplace behaviours.

Professional Discussion

A structured conversation where the apprentice discusses their work, knowledge, and experience with an assessor.

Knowledge Test

A written or online test that assesses the apprentice's understanding of key concepts, regulations, and theoretical knowledge.

Portfolio

A collection of evidence demonstrating the apprentice's work and achievements throughout their apprenticeship.

Project

A substantial piece of work completed by the apprentice that demonstrates their ability to apply knowledge and skills to real situations.

Interview

A formal discussion where assessors ask specific questions to verify the apprentice's competence and understanding.

Note: The specific assessment methods used will depend on the apprenticeship standard. Each standard has its own assessment plan that specifies which methods must be used.
